I just got off the phone with Barbara Smith, the "rock" of the B.C. Conservative Party. She told me that Gary is an excellent candidate, fully approved by our Party. He is sick and tired, as most of us are, of the NDP and the Libs status quo crap. Bring on some new blood into our pathetic politics in B.C.
Also, issues like mental health and how they relate to crime, are of major concern to Gary.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Gary sounds like a decent candidate as do the others. One who seems rather special to me is David Marley. He is running as an independent in the West Vancouver Capilano riding. I asked myself if voting for an independent might not be wasting my vote but quickly dissuaded myself of this idea. When you think how watered down our representative democracy has become you start to yearn for someting better, something closer to the goal of true deomocracy. With political parties hogging the elections, our MLAs have become nothing more than apologists for their parties. They come back to the riding to explain their government's policies to you the voter rather than explaining your wants and desires in Victoria to the government. That isn't how our form of political system is supposed to work. If David Marley were to be elected you can expect a big push to change that. Why? Because he would not be stifled by the leader of a party. The premier could not tell him to stop or be kicked out of caucus as he has none. He is, in fact free to pressure the government to do what you, the people want. He has been in politics for more than 25 years although mostly behind the scenes, but as a result he knows how to make things happen. Seriously consider voting for him. Dear Anon 3:24,
It would have been nice if you would have commented under your own name ... however, I agree with your comment. Mr. Marley will be facing Mr. Eddie Petrossian, B.C. Conservative candidate in this riding. It is very interesting that they basically stand for the same understanding of government and democratic process.
Anonymous said has a change to the website mentioned. It should read www.vote4marley.ca instead of .com
If Mr. Hee want's to be taken seriously by anyone other than the few who already know him, he seriously should try to drum up some money to buy some decent signs. For as little $1000 he could easily buy enough to minimally cover the entire riding with something that isn't laughable.
Photocopies on 8 1/2 x 11 pieces of paper doesn't exactly cut it in anything more important than a high school student council campaign.
Wendy, what exactly do you mean by 'status quo crap'?
What you say is 'crap' may be very important to others. You mention that this new 'White Knight' of yours is a family man. What does that mean? Is he promoting family values from a rightist, Christian sense? If so, then as a gay man, I want to know that so I can vote against him. At least with the Liberals and NDP, I know that my hard fought for rights aren't going to be trampled upon. Also, how exactly does your candidate feel that mental health relates to crime and what actions is he planning to take? What protections will he put in place to protect those with mental illness? If you are going to try to drum up support for this guy, you're going to have to do more than summarize his biography!
Dear Anon 7:50:
You said: You mention that this new 'White Knight' of yours is a family man. What does that mean? Is he promoting family values from a rightist, Christian sense? If so, then as a gay man, I want to know that so I can vote against him. At least with the Liberals and NDP, I know that my hard fought for rights aren't going to be trampled upon. You make it pretty clear that you don't like families and won't vote for a "family man". That's pretty severe isn't it? Aren't you jumping to HUGE conclusions?
Are there no "middle ground" people out there? People who may have families but wouldn't trample on your rights?
By immediately declaring family "men" and Christians as "persona non grata" in your political world, doesn't that make you guilty of the very type of "rights trampling" that you warn against?
Please don't forget, the Charter of Rights guarantees against prejudice based on sexual orientation AND religious views.
Sheesh.
Not jumping to conclusions but asking a question. There is middle ground RePete, but that isn't the question that I asked. I asked very specifically if he is right-wing Christian. I prefer to be up front and to the point about my questions.
I think Repete's point is that it might be fair to ask where they stand on Gay Rights issues rather than dismissing them simply because of their faith. What you did was discrimination because you based it on their religion rather than their view on a particular issue.
(although I think it is quite irrelevant at the Provincial level)
I think the NDP vetting process is about as advanced Greens and BC Conservatives.
Yet another NDP candidate bites the dust in Vancouver. This time for displaying pictures on his facebook page of him fondling womens breasts and a picture of a guy touching his junk.
Stay classy NDP.
There are several of Hee's glum-faced signs torn down. You can't even read them unless you happen to be walking by the posts they are tacked onto. Garage sale signs are bigger.
Another improvement would be having someone besides himself acting as his own financial agent. I'm not even sure if this is legal under the Elections Act.
Furthermore, since this is a blog post, it doesn't need to be "authorized" by the financial agent.
Ladies and Gentlemen. May I have your attention. I have chosen to step-aside from managing my business full-time and I have detoured away from my duties as a husband, father, and grandfather in order to offer my services to the Constituency of North Vancouver - Seymour with my style of common sense character and decision making behaviour. I have a concern for our economy, environment and respect for democracry. But I do not accept intimidation as a way to change my beliefs. I am not a loose cannon but I am accountable for my actions. I would apologize to you if I offend you unintentionally. I do not use money, wealth, or power to attack others who are less stronger. I help those in need including blood donation to the Canadian Blood Service of Canada and donation money for the Red Cross. I have helped small merchants to join into an association so that they could sustain themselves in the competitive grocery store businss. I have previously work in, manufacturing, construction and the government positions. There are vandals who destroy signages in the Constituency and who have no respect for democracy. These vandals destroy our styroform signages which are not recyclable and which pollute the environment as landfill waste. These irresponsible individuals use abuse and intimidation against defenceless individuals. They use the Blog to voice they insults in order to hid their identity. I have seen under-aged teenagers asking adults to buy alcohol in front of liquor stores and teenagers on bicycles selling drugs . I see people suffering from drug, gambling, and alchol addition. So for me to do nothing is not right. And two wrongs do not make a Right. If you vote Liberal or NDP, You have a Freedom of Choice. But I say to you readers, the right choice is a Conservative Choice.
Thank you for your time. This is written by the BC Conservation Candidate for North Vancouver - Seymour Constituency. - Gary B Hee
Well, if you ask me Gary Hee, shoddy signs or not certainly deserves more credit for running than the also-ran, whatsisname, egotistical, parachute candidate Daniel Quinn for the Green Party. This guy doesn't live in the community and knows very little about it other than "it's a beautiful riding and almost certainly right of center". Any one except perhaps a very high profile candidate who has something to offer like Elizabeth May or other hardly deserves to run here. The Greens should have waited or looked and at least gone with some one who resided in NV-Seymour. And if they didn't find any one they should have run no one.
Regarding the signage issue, there are people who are more upset about some signs than about cancer, liver, or heart disease. Since the funding has not been allocated as of yet and because the new design for the signs have not be finalized, there are temporary sign being used to rely the message of a BC Conservative Candidate in the North Vancouver - Seymour Constituency. Hence, Sorry For The Inconvenience.
Gary B. Hee
Well folks, what do you think? I think Gary is excellent and knows about what he speaks. Many of us are sick and tired of the NDP and the Libs. We need new blood, I will be voting for Gary.
Mr. Hee, I recommend you engage a proofreader to review your writings; your post above is riddled with spelling and grammatical errors. You even got the name of your party wrong -- it's not the "BC Conservation" Party.
From looking at the party website and candidate list, it looks like it's the same old group of far right social dinosaurs from the Unity, Christian Heritage, Reform, etc., parties. The retrograde views these groups have with regard to things such as rights of homosexuals and immigrants find little support from the vast majority of residents on the North Shore. I won't be supporting your candidacy or those of other Conservative party candidates.
His grammar is horrible.
He hasn't offered us any solutions to his 'issues'. What exactly are they and how is he going to address them? I see no substance.
Gee Anon 5:31 pm, what a sweeping and baseless denigration of tens of thousands of North Shore residents. Prejudiced? Oh, not you of course. Just so-called "far right social dinosaurs."
Gee Wendy,
You're are usually so hard on bloggers who don't have a firm grasp of the English language. How hypocritical.
Not to mention that your own political leanings are very left so how do you figure supporting a right wing conservative? How contradictory.
Where can a schedule of All Candidate meetings be obtained? Anyone?
There's one on May 4, Seymour United Church. For others, check the North Shore News or individual candidate websites. Local community associations usually sponsor them, but check also with the Chambers of Commerce.
Anon 6:38
I am not in any "slot" of politics. I address every issue on its own merits. Mr. Hee is excellent. I support him and I am a card-carrying member of the B.C. Conservative Party.
Hey Wendy, how about answering the questions that were asked of you? Better yet, have your new hero come here and answer them. Make sure he proof reads before posting. Is English his second language?
I popped onto Gary's web pages, both for his business ans his campaign, hoping to be impressed. I was, but not in a good way. The writings are slim and weak, the information scattered and no good solid messages, other than he's obviously ticked off that the hospital in New West is gone.
Too bad - I'm looking for an alternative to Campbell (I've voted for him every other time, but not this time) and was hoping Hee was it. Hee's not.
Anon. 8:01
Perhaps you should check out your own comment. The last time I checked "ans" was not a word. I guess you were worked up!
We, as citizens of B.C., HAVE TO get rid of our corrupt government. I was hoping you were onboard. If not, then be apathetic and DON'T vote. Or ... vote for the Greens at least.
Wendy, why do you always have to resort to the name-calling when people don't agree with you? Just because people don't like your candidate doesn't mean that they are apathetic.
As far as I can see, your candidate lacks any real substance.
I was on board Wendy, but the Conservatives have to field solid leadership material if they want to be taken seriously. Hee may be a nice guy, but based on his own publications and marketing, he's not solid leadership material.
As for apathetic - no, that's not a word to describe me. I will vote as I always do, but for the first time in my life, it may be a strategic vote and note a "real" vote.
Gary Hee probably does not have Engllish as his first language. If that is so then he is doing very well with his English. He is probably fluent in either Cantonese or Mandarin. I suggest all the rest of you look about you more and realize that in a generation or two Chinese (probably Mandarin) will be at least as important as English in this country, and probably the first language spoken by the majority of Canadians under forty. Second may be Punjabi. There was a reason why Jack Layton suggested that it be made an official language. Stop criticizing those who are using more than one language, and start getting yourselves and your children fluent in what will be the languages of the Canadian majority in the near future.
I have an interesting comment here. I switched to Shaw security when my Norton expired. Since then all emails from the BC Conservative Party have been automatically put into a JUNK FILE. I did not ask for this, and I am on hold with Shaw as I write ... Methinks this is political.
Wendy,
Ha Ha!
When my anti-virus expired I went with Shaw Secure as well. It's a good system. If there are attachments that are questionable, it will place it in junk or otherwise.
After waiting for an hour to talk to a Shaw technician, I was informed that they have decided in their "lack of wisdom" to block certain emails. This is unacceptable, and I will be receiving a call from a "Supervisor" tomorrow at 8 AM to confirm that I do not want my emails blocked.
This is ridiculous! This is a lack of democracy. Who are they to decide which emails I want to receive? It's big brother superseding our rights. I'm sure some of you will agree.
I agree! This is preposterous, outrageous, and absurd. I will look forward as to what the Supervisor at Shaw says in defense of this intrusion of your privacy.
Gee Wendy, what Shaw is doing is no different than when you delete people's posts on this blog. It's not nice having your freedom messed with, is it? But what does your problem with Shaw have to do with the topic? If you want to rant about Shaw, why not start a post for that specific topic? Oh yeah, because it has nothing to do with North Vancouver politics.
Wendy,
Why don't you get your own mail server and register a domain? Then you don't have to worry about how Shaw filters email.
As for the political candidates the majority are self serving rejects trying to get a seat at the taxpayer trough. No wonder why voter turn out is so low.
Did anybody read today's North Shore News? DNV road money hits a bump.
It is what former DNV Councillor Ernie Crist said all along ... the tunnel-visioned Council at the time votes in favour of developments, their logic is that there will be a larger tax base. Wrong! The infrastructure costs paid by US -- DNV taxpayers, do not go far enough to cover "plow damages" for example. Traffic in Lynn Valley is a nightmare, most especially at Lynn Valley Road and Mountain Highway. I know ... I walk through that intersection every day.
Wendy,
Are you going to vote in favour of changing FPTP to BC-STV in the May 12th Referendum?
What is FPTP? I will be voting in favour of the STV, the single transferrable vote.

North Shore News
Wednesday, April 22, 2009
Provincial Conservative candidate Gary Hee is cautiously optimistic about his chances in next month's election.
"I would like to forecast it's a certainty," said Hee. "But I would be foolish to overestimate myself."
As a member of a party that garnered just 0.55 per cent of the popular vote the last time British Columbians went to the polls, the 64-year-old Lynn Valley resident faces an uphill battle in North Vancouver-Seymour.
But Hee believes he represents a viable alternative to the status quo. Although he supported the provincial Liberals in the last election, he feels it is time for a change.
"A lot of (events in our province) look good, but deep down under the surface it has created a lot of unsolvable problems," said Hee. "The current direction is to continue with expansion . . . but not to fix up the current problems."
Hee has raised two children and a grandchild in his 35 years on the North Shore, and he was at one point a block watch captain. For the past 10 years, he has run Paramount Computers Ltd., a company that sells and installs point-of-purchase equipment for small businesses.
"I decided this is where my passion was: Dealing in high technology, like barcode scanning," said Hee.
If elected, the Conservative would put health and education among his top priorities. He would like to see unused space in schools and hospitals, for example, put to better use.
"Instead of tearing down the hospitals in slow areas, make them multiple-use, where people can get high-tech training in the medical field," he said.
As for taxes, Hee would not necessarily lower them, but would certainly try to make them simpler. Charging five per cent GST and seven per cent PST on a single product is just too complicated, he said.
"Just to calculate the extra two per cent on an item that's, like, $1.49, you just can't multiply one times two, because it's an odd number," he said. "You have to spend your time to work out what this amount in PST is and then . . . submit it to the provincial government."
Pegging both at five per cent would make more sense, said Hee. Income tax, however, would be harder to solve.
"I couldn't change that today or tomorrow or on May 12," he said. "This is where professional people have got to come in who know all the tax laws. . . . That's a pretty big field, so I have to leave the answer to that question at another time."
Hee would also like to see more support for small businesses, and more human-oriented -- as opposed to machine-oriented -- mega-projects.
"There will be large projects," he said. "It's just the proportion of human labour would be increased, and the proportion of machine content . . . would be lowered so that it would provide more sustainable employment."
As for splitting the vote on the right -- and inadvertently getting a left-leaning candidate elected -- Hee is unconcerned.
"I'm more worried about getting the wrong candidate in there," he said. "Getting a candidate into politics is one of the easy things; once he's in there, if he's not a very good candidate, then mistakes could be made."

Dear Editor:
Kudos for a sensible plea (Vote of Support, April 15) to take a unique opportunity to improve our voting system -- to make it fairer and more reflective of our actual wishes.
What would this election be like if we had BC-STV now? Readers might be curious about that and a website, www.trystv.ca, allows visitors to try out the system with our current crop of candidates.

It's very interesting that y'all are reading the North Shore News. Very interesting info. in today's edition.
Don't blame council for plow damage, Wendy. Blame the plow drivers who aren't using the necessary due care whilst doing their job. Actually, in all seriousness, how anyone can blame anyone for damages incurred during a 100 year snow event is beyond me.
Wendy, for someone who fancies themself as a political sophisticate, you don't know what FPTP stands for? It's what the STV intends to replace....FIRST PAST THE POST....
doh!
Much as I'm unimpressed by what I see coming out of Victoria with respect to this riding (and I am a 'card carrying' BC Liberal) I don't see anything from the Conservatives that would induce me to switch. I had frankly expected better from them.
I agree Hee's signs are not up to snuff for a serious candidate.
As for the curbs - well our curb (across the street actually) was damaged not by the plow but by the tractors that were sent round to sheer off the snowdrifts caused by people parking on both sides of the street and blocking the plows. The purpose of the tractors was to widen the roadway - which is important since we are on a bus route.
I have two things to say to DNV on this:
(1) It's time you fixed the curb!
(2) We need a bylaw mandating parking on one side of the street (I don't care which one) during snow accumulations greater than 10" or so to ensure the plows can get through. If you don't want to mandate this District-wide at least require it on bus routes!
Lyle,
I'm not sure how you would expect that to come in to play. Some people abandon there summer tire clad cars way before "10" of snow or so," so how do you propose clearing "one side" of the road? People can't even move the cars. So what, tow them all away? Ticket them all? This sounds more like a Provincial level issue. In Quebec I understand snow tires are mandatory in the winter.
I know this has gone all off-topic, however I spoke to our illustrious leader today, Barry Forward. I just got back from Jane Thornthwaite's "meet and greet" which was held about 1/2 of a block from where I live.
I have several comments:
1. It is very interesting that I have known Jane for 5 years and we are cordial, we are not friends, but we respect each other, I believe. I have been on her email list regarding the school district since 2005
2. It is also not good for my party, the BC Conservative Party when the Libs can ask people to pick up signs, and 10,000 pamphlets to pass out at will, because as Jane said, "They are no good after May 12."
3. Jane also spoke about the people who spend time on the North side of the Second Narrows Memorial Crossing screaming "Vote Jane, Vote Liberals." She also said that they get a free breakfast after.
I believe that democracy in this province is governed by capitalism. And new parties don't have a hope in Hell of getting in too soon. But they will, it will just take time.
"This sounds more like a Provincial level issue."
What? Snow removal is clearly a municipal issue. And yes, they should make a bylaw that restricts parking on one side during snow, but they shouldn't have to ticket and tow the car to the impound, they should simply tow the car out of the way or to a nearby parking lot out of the way.
Quebec I understand snow tires are mandatory in the winter.Quebec is about sheep herding. I'm not a sheep, and will never visit Quebec (again) let alone live there.
Without a doubt, in all my travels, I have never been treated so badly by such a bunch of arrogant rude people.
So frankly, I don't care what Quebec does, it has absolutely no bearing on me (other than the province taking $8.3 BILLION in transfer payments last year).
"New parties don't have a chance!"
Uh - Wendy - I heard the leader of the BC Conservatives on Bill Good this week saying that his party was a very OLD party that had elected several premiers (ok he didn't mention that the last time was shortly after WW2 but whatever) and that that was a reason people should see them as trustworthy.
As for Jane encouraging people to pick up her literature and lawn signs ... well what candidate doesn't?
(I picked up several of YOUR signs after the election and delivered them to your house but I'm an exception)
Regarding snow, my street didn't get bus service for nearly 3 weeks during the snow because Translink said it wasn't safe due to the road narrowing caused primarily by cars parked on both sides. MOST of these were local residents who had lots of time to relocate their vehicles before being snowed in and COULD easily all have been on the same side of the street or in driveways.
Lyle,
"New parties don't have a chance." I never said that.
No, you said, "And new parties don't have a hope in Hell of getting in too soon." Considering you don't care about semantics, it looks the same to me!
Wendy clearly believes the BC Conservatives are born again or somehow reincarnated since by no reasonable standard can they be considered "new".
Anyone who thinks so has clearly never heard of Richard McBride, Simon Tolmie or William Bowser! Or knows the original party affiliation of WAC Bennett.
I voted for them several times during the time of Scott Wallace.
Anyone interested can check out History of the BC Conservative Party"This article is clearly written by a supporter of the party and certainly the author does not consider it a "new" party!
Actually Lyle, I am not impressed with the BCCP lately. One example, Hee says is not in favour of the STV. What?
Gary B. Hee's comment on May 15,2009:
To the winners of the 2009 B.C. Election, I congratulate you for your success. To my supporters and voters, I thank you for your backing and trust. I decided late to participate in this 2009 election; yet, I was not discouraged. I knowledged that the Liberal and NDP parties have large sums of accumulated donation money to run their expensive campaign;still, I was not discouraged. I worked hard and endlessly to fulfil my duties, willingly, as the B.C. Conservative Candidate for North Vancouver - Seymour Constituency. My budget was small, effective, and meaningful to me as a newcomer, which resulted in 865 votes for my first time. Despite the pressure and stress developed in this special election and regardless of the geographical terrain that I had to travel, endure, and overcome, I was not discouraged. I ran this campaign with hope, pride, and honour to serve those who know me. During the last 3 weeks, my dearest grandson was simultaneously, admitted to the B.C. Childrens Hospital in Vancouver, for his open heart surgery and now experiences unexpected complication. For him, I persevered. To Maxxwell, I say "I love you". Lance Armstrong once said, "Be Strong", while Obama once said "Yes, we can". To serve unselfishly with hope for those who suffer pain or the lost of love ones by various reasons, I feel for you. I cry with you. Life is precious which no money can buy. To those individuals who have faith in me, I thank you sincerely and truthfully for your support in the BC 2009 election.
