I have sent the following email to the DNV Council. It might seem unimportant to you, however I find this lack of concern for our taxpayers' dollars very important.
Hi folks,
I am writing today about the fact that the two (motion-activated) doors to the Lynn Valley Library (one on Lynn Valley Road and the other onto the plaza) are always open. Isn't the DNV policy to become sustainable? Why are we District taxpayers paying to heat the outdoors in the winter and cool it in the summer? I have spoken to many staff at the library and they agree with me but they say that there is nothing they can do because the "Juice Guy" says it is too hot or too cold.
I respectfully request that these doors be closed.

Wendy,
I wrote this on the blog back in Dec. of 2007...

Hate to be a nit picker but, one thing I noticed as I hobbled by the entrance on the Lynn Valley Rd. side on crutches (I've fractured my left ankle in a hiking accident)on my way to Waves, the entrance doors flew open. They should adjust the sensor so the doors don't open when you're just going by on the sidewalk. This would save us some energy costs as I noticed alot of warm air blowing out in to the sidewalk.

Take note North Vancouverites - this is the kind of thing people complain about when we are blessed to live in the society we are in.
South African friends of mine will reflect on times they had to take cover and/or open fire on home invaders.
I knew a holocaust survivor who described his time at Birkenau, being starved and worked almost to death.
My Uncle re-united with a friend of his after the war who was taken POW by the Japanese and regularly tortured for over two years before his release.
Then there's Wendy's complaints about signs on bathrooms and John's about the sensor at Waves not working.
We've become a society of whiners. When did that happen? Aren't there more important things to talk about than petty nuisances? I imagine Wendy and John to be the sorts that spend their days looking for things to complain about rather than appreciate how good they really have it. Ah, the luxury of feeling so entitled must be a grand thing.
We always have naysayers that say there are better parts of the world to live. This does not mean that we cannot fight for livability in our community.
This is not a "petty nuicance"
You right-wing idiots are far beyond contempt.
What would you have our future generations do?
How will you have them handle the global warming?
Whiners!! You should whine a little if you care about your kids.
Do you care about your children and grandchildren?
Obviously not!
You know, I appreciate we have it very well here. I really do but, it is all relative, is it not. Our standards are higher here. We are lucky and fortunate. Very much so. This does not mean that the issue of energy waste should not be brought forth. I listened at length today on the CBC to David Suzuki and two or three people he interviewed. We are at a cross roads with the environment. Any thing we can do to reduce ghgs may help our children and grandchildren. Anything we can do could make a difference. Stephen Harper says we can not go back to the 1990 ghgs the Kyoto Accord has asked for and do the things that are necessary to help the environment without sacrificing the economy. I say he is wrong. I appreciate the other points Anons 6:37 and 6:43 have made but, you are both as wrong as Mr. Harper and just do not get the environmental crisis we are facing.
I agree John and I would like to add that David Suzuki championed the environment long before it was fashionable. Kudos to Dr Suzuki.
No John, I do very much "get" the crisis we are facing.
My solution however isn't going to be to take the issue to the manager of the local waves coffee shop.
My goal will be to support real change through private organizations and political organizations that seek to enact change on a global level.
Think Global act local is great - but one trip to Shanghai, Hong Kong, New Delhi or a bunch of other places I could mention will reveal to you quite quickly that the necessary solutions to the crisis you cite will be necessary at the macro level.
Thank you Anon 6:37 for pointing out the real suffering of South Africans, holocast victims, and Japanese prisoners of war. Their experience certainly beggars many of our little peeves.
It's quite an irony that having empathy for holocast surviors and Japanese POWs makes you a "right wing idiot". For some reason I seem to recall that the Nazi and Japanese axis were thought to be a bit right wing and that was the point of World War II. Lest we forget.
Dear Mr/Ms Economics:
I find your comment idiotic. You might have knowledge of economics, however your knowledge of politcs is non existent.
What are you talking about,"to take the issue to the manager of the local waves coffee shop."... You misinterpret something. I was walking by the doors of the Library on my way to Waves.
We are all together in a big boat that has many holes and the ship is sinking. If we work together globally to fix the holes in the boat we may have a chance at keeping the boat afloat and our survival.
I also believe we do NOT have an arguement here if you really do "get" it.
Bang on John,
What are these people talking about?
Wendy, why do you need to post about little notes you send to council? Are you looking for a pat on the back? Why are so hungry for recognition for your actions? Does the action not provide you with enough reward without having to look for additional recognition?
This is the first email I have sent to DNV Council in years. I do not have to defend myself. You Sir/Madam should be so lucky as to be able to comment on this little blog under the guise of anonymity.
Oh surprise. My post disappeared. Truth hurts, eh?
Are John and Wendy sleeping with each other again?
You'd think so, the way they're always gushing over each others comments.
Wendy,
Why is that you feel the need to resort to name calling? Again, you are calling posters 'idiotic' just because they are expressing an opinion that doesn't jive with your own. And you wonder why people make nasty comments towards you. You also rely on deleting posts to censor those you disagree with. What makes you think any of this is acceptable? Do you think your antics will endear you to the voting public if you ever actually run again? Rather than delete, learn to debate. Rather than call people names, learn to bite your tongue and be gracious. If you are serious about politics, I suggest you become serious about learning how to deal with people because this blog is only a small taste of what you'll experience during an election and if you ever win a seat on council. So far, from where I sit, you have a very long road ahead of you.

NOT sustainable..... you mean like having at the push of a button a chain link door coming down to seal off the underground parking lot below the library/plaza?
A: Couldn't it be incorporated into a District physical activity program in the morning and late at night (not to be left solely as the responsibility of Plaza janitors/security guards)
NOT sustainable....... having fans to exhaust the fumes from the motor vehicles and providing more fans to provide air for people as they make their ways to the Plaza level
NOT sustainable....... Operation of Elevators... and just how much hot air is being transferred from within the library to the unheated underground parking spaces via these elevators.... Please, use the stairs.
Could we go back to the time when open air parking lots were the norm?
To classify as an open air parkade, a certain percentage of the exterior walls are required to open directly to the outside. Impossible for any underground parking garage. Above ground parking garages take up valuable street frontage that would better be used by retail or office uses. Also, they are usually not very attractive (although there have been efforts to improve their appearance as can be seen in Calgarys downtown).
The real trick is going to be in getting people out of their cars to make parking garages a minor component to any new development. That won't happen until we see excellent transit that negates the need for cars along with the sort of density where we see people living in the same neighborhood that they work. Sustainability is a laudable goal, but we're no where near it. There are too many hurdles that we need to overcome first. Many of those are our own perceptions of what makes a livable, sustainable, urban form. My advice, don't hold your breath.
CM
And of course TransLink's need to increase bus fares dramatically which will only go to drive us back to our cars.
Pity.
The Port Mann Project should be shut down. $3 billion will nicely cover all TransLink's shortfalls.
Port Mann includes HOV, you can't have one without the other.
By shutting down Port Mann Bridge Super 10 lanes you'll go to increase Translink spending on more vehicles to sit in grid lock.
Anons 9:20 9:44,
I have done no gushing whatsoever. That's really a very disrespectful comment but, I guess that's an easy attribute when you have no real identity.
I was at the TransLink meeting with Sue Cook. Where is she these days?
TransLink's own staff said that within 5 years the traffic gridlock will be the same as or worse than it is now regarding the Port Mann project.
TransLink should stop this project and use this $3 billion on making public transportation more affordable and accessible and get people out of their cars.
Boring, boring, over again, however if issues are not looked after they must keep rearing their "ugly" heads.
Wendy
Wendy, Where do you find out about all these meetings to go to? I don't see them advertied in the local papers.
I actually saw an ad last week inviting people to attend a meeting with TransLink in which they would seek comments on upcoming fare increases...
::insert you own joke here::
This thread has been my smile of the day.
First we have Wendy giving David Suzuki kudos and calling him the campion of enviornment. Funny she says this but what she does is fight hard to avoid the smallest amount of higher density that he says is needed for us to reduce our enviornmental impact in order for our great grandchildren to have a community that is livable.
Secondly I find it funny that she actually thinks that any member of council has a clue or control over the doors at the library or the day to day running of it. I suspect that for any of them to actually do anything about it they will need to make just as many phone calls to get to the bottom of it as you and I would.
Wendy if you really want action taken why not take it to the people who run the library? That Wendy would be the Library board.
Anon Tuesday, November 17, 2009 8:09:00 AM, your points are very good. You beat me to the punch on the David Suzuki comments. I was about to bring up the same point. It's kind of funny that Wendy fights tooth and nail against the very things that will bring reduce traffic, pollution, etc. I don't think she spends much time actually studying the principles of urban planning. Nor does she seem to be terribly in tune with what it is David Suzuki and his foundation are promoting.
Oh, and don't be surprised if your post gets deleted.
CM
Well the difference is that any Councillor wanting to call the Library probably knows the name of the person to call particularly if said Councillor is or has been on the Library board.
You probably don't.
Having talked to these folks myself I know Heather Scoular and her staff are very approachable but you have to make the first step to talk to them.
Lyle your right I can't name them. But I do know that the answer as to who is on the board can easly be found on the DNV website.
I would be shocked if someone who does as much complaining as Wendy and claims to know as much about the process at the Dist Hall as she does, would not also know that the answer is on their web site. If she does not then that pretty well confirms that I am probale not wrong in thinking that she does very little research into many of the claims to wrong doings at DNV that she puts forward here.
Anon 10:12AM, you are quite right. I am learning that Wendy just shoots from the hip, so to speak. When confronted, she shows no interest (or perhaps no ability) for reasoned discourse. She often resorts to censorship, insults and/or name-calling when confronted by a view opposing her own. For that reason alone, she'll go nowhere, politically.
CM
Well I know them and they know me mostly because I head up corporate giving for our company and we have financially supported the Library for a couple of years.
