As we close in on the end of 2009, time for our little blog to look into the crystal ball and make some predictions relating to political life here on the North Shore. Again, we will use the main post as a starting point, and add users/members predictions as the days leading up to New Year's Day unfold.
To get things going we will make a few predictions (shooting from the hip of course) to start the list off. Please add your predictions as comments and you will see the list grow. The only caveat being that we will try to keep the predictions of a personal nature to a minimum.
North Vancouver 2010 Political Predictions:
1. Olympics a huge success in North Vancouver, everyone has a great time!
2. Traffic complaints from Olympic event goers peak February 28th.
3. Driving while texting accidents go unnoticed by local RCMP (B.F.)
4. Tim Hortons on Lonsdale registers most signatures in anti-HST (NoMealTax) campaign
5. NorthVancouverPolitics.com celebrates 5th anniversary at Churchill's (Feb. 18th)
6. While I would happily go to Churchill's on the 18th, it may be a bit packed with the Hotel being absolutely full from the Olympics.
7. First Nation Billboard has been accepted; flashing lights ignored; no accidents caused by the billboards; millions in revenue have accrued. (B.R.)
8. Gordon Campbell declares Olympics a success, and under budget. Taxpayers for three generations pay for the cost over-runs. (B.R.)
9. The lack of funding for local social services should become front page again early in the New Year.
10. I predict there will be a change in the blog format to celebrate it's fifth year anniversary. (J.S.)
11. The BC economy goes underground once the HST kicks in, earning Mike Holmes several seasons of work on "Holmes on Homes" and "Holmes Inspection" television series in BC and Ontario. November 2010 brings angry protests from anti-HST folk, bringing down the Campbell government. The NDP rides into power on its coat tails.

Barry Rueger will be boring.
At least I don't lie through my teeth to the voters...
The lack of funding for local social services should become front page again early in the New Year.
Those in our community who have financial, physical or mental issues, with no more access to community programs, will soon begin to plug up our already burdened ER at LGH. No food at the food bank, no help for seniors, no addiction services; the list goes on and on.
It is so disheartening to see that not one of our provincial MLA’s have shown any leadership or understanding as to what is at stake, and have blindly accepted that these services are expendable. They are the ones to blame for the funding shortfalls that Vancouver Coastal is dealing with, and all of us are going to be affected. Can’t get your broken leg fixed in under 5 days? Sorry. Not our fault, just wait your turn after the suicide attempts, starving children and mentally confused seniors.
The local government in the City of North Vancouver is just as bad as the province. Their only mandate seems to be to either a) hope the Liberals fall because of the cuts, so they refuse to help as well just to make sure we get the point, or b) insist it would be worse under NDP leadership and refuse to help because that would not fiscally responsible.
Either way, the political will displayed by our current politicians is pathetic. That should be a big story next year, but we’ll see.
I think many of you won’t care unless you are directly affected, but then I hope I am wrong.
I predict there will be a change in the blog format to celebrate it's fifth year anniversary.

Another prediction: more Olympic "surprises." Like the Whistler Library being shut down for more than a month so that the Olympics can take over the building...
Actually Barry no VANOC bashing on the library closer as it was not VANOC's idea or doing. It is also not a suprise at all - Whistler Council voted on it about a year ago. Council wanted to have a place to show case Whistler & they are paying for it out of the hotel taxes.
http://www.whistlerforthedisabled.com/blog/2009/10/26/whistler-public-library-to-become-whistler-house-during-the-2010-games/
Barry the Whistler library as others have pointed out is being shut down by Whistler not Vanoc. As you may or may not know Whistler is totally about tourism. Without tourism they have no jobs and the town dies. Simple as that. Only a fool would think it a bad thing for the town to take advantage of all the people there for the games to promoto itself as an option for a return visit. The town has few other buildings it could use for that purpose and why not use the one that will see low use during the games anyways.
Think of it this way. Most people in Whistler are involved one way or another in tourism. They for the most part will all be working long hours during the games few will have time to go to the library. They got by with a traveling bus for a library for years so for the vast majority they can get by without it for a month as they know it is in their best intreast to keep the people coming in the future.
Without tourism, Whistler wouldn't be large enough to support a municipal library... suck it up.
I would think the City "Fathers" of Whistler are/were very much aware of Whistler's role in the grand scheme of things - why else would they style themselves the "Resort Municipality" of Whistler" rather than a "District Municipality" or "City of" the way most Metro Vancouver municipalities are styled?
I'd say they understand the importance of tourism in their community fairly well!
George Pringle will move back to Ottawa
George Pringle will move back to Ottawa - we will be lined up at his door to help him pack his bags
Any chance Wendy will be going with him?
I heard he had bone cancer and didn't have long to live.
Previous poster - I'm NOT a George fan, but that isn't funny if it's true. George, are you out there?
He appears at Council meetings limping with a cane for over two years.
Maybe it's testicular cancer?
George should stop interfering with the business of Council, we elect them for that and we're quite happy with modest buildings of 16 -24 floors going up within 8 blocks of the Lonsdale corridor.
The last post is contemptible, sounds like someone with an axe to grind.
It's no worse than some of George's old posts. There are quite a few tactless people 'playing' on this blog. Some are anons, some are not.
That's how you justify your sick statements? I don't see anything like that posted on this blog except those who harass Wendy with similar sick comments.
Show us the proof.
I wasn't justifying anything. In fact I'm not the one who made the comments you found offensive. Just offering a possible reason why. If the comments offend, then perhaps your sensibilities are too sensitive to be reading a political blog.
Maybe you should grow up and not make this blog more of a cesspool than it already is.
13. Wendy will quit NorthVancouverPolitics.com
If only
Starting in March John Furlong starts getting all kinds of provincial awards for his work on the Olympics despite the fact that (excluding the folks who will protest most anything) most of the people who are browned off about the Olympics are browned off due to the heavy-handedness of Furlong and his VANOC people in the first place!
